A seminar "European security and defence policy - South-eastern Europe in the evolution of European security structures" was opened by introductory speech of the Chief of the European Security and Defence Policy Task Force (ESDP) and Acting Head of the European Security and Defence College Secretariat Hans-Bernhard Weisserth at the Centre for Security Cooperation (RACVIAC) on Tuesday, October 13.
The seminar was attended by representatives of the countries of Southeast Europe - national parliaments, ministries of defence, general staff, ministries of foreign affairs, the Faculty of Political Science of University of Zagreb, independent defence analysts, and representatives of the European Union and NATO.
ESDP is an integral part of the Common Foreign and Security Policy, with the main aim of strengthening the EU external activities by creating their own capabilities for foreign activities through the development of autonomous civil and military capabilities for international conflict prevention and management of international crises.
The purpose of the seminar held in RACVIAC was to review the historical development of European security and defence policy, and internal organizational structure of ESDP, the achievements so far in the civil - military ESDP missions in Europe, Asia and Africa. The seminar discussed the effects of the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty on ESDP and cooperation between ESDP and NATO. Particularly important part of the seminar was dedicated to the relationship between ESDP and South-eastern Europe and how ESDP affected the level of regional security and cooperation, development of defence sector, and to prevent conflicts and manage crises.
